"Generally there are 4 levels of awareness at which a human being can live. Level 1, Body Level: This is like being an animal. A human being who lives at body level of awareness does everything only and only to satisfy needs of body. Just like an animal does. These kind of human beings are very small in number. For example, criminals of society. They can kill anybody, they can eat anything etc etc just to satisfy needs of their body. They are living at level of their body. Level 2, Mind Level: This is the level of non- vegetarian people. They can be compassionate with other human beings but they see no "logic" in being compassionate with a "delicious" animal. Level 3, Intellect Level: This is the level of vegetarian people. They are compassionate with not only human being but also other living beings. Level 4, Soul Level: Only ascetic people live at this level of awareness. Its not about how the other side feels pain. Its how you feel pain of other side. Its about compassion. Do you feel compassionate about a leaf? Then you should become an ascetic. You can remain hungry for many days. Then God's voice will emerge, "O you ignorant one! Why are you not eating anything?" You will reply, "O Lord, I have sacrificed everything to meet you. I have sacrificed my hunger because I want to meet you. I can sacrifice anything for you. Please appear before me." God's voice will say, "You have not sacrificed many things yet. I cannot appear before you." You will say, "I can sacrifice everything O Lord! Just tell me what sacrifice you want from me?" God's voice will say, "Compassion is good to rise from level of mind to level of intellect. But now compassion itself has become your possession. You need to sacrifice this possession too. Then I will appear before you!" You will get scared. You will say, "How should I sacrifice my compassion, My Lord?" God's voice will say, "Go to Maa Kaali and kill an animal. Can you do that?" You will say, "No Lord, How can I kill an innocent animal?" God's voice will say, "There you go! Your compassion has become your just another possession and you are not ready to give up this possession. I cannot appear before you!" Please do not interpret thins conversation as per your knowledge. You are living at the level of intellect. You need to think for a moment to understand this conversation. This ritual of "Bali" is only for the ascetics and Tapaswi. However not all ascetics have to do this. Some ascetics become so compassionate that their compassion becomes their possession. Then this Bali is required to shed that possession. This ritual, like many others, has been distorted now and people sacrifice animals without even knowing what it means. They say "they please Maa Kaali" but in fact they are angering Her by sacrificing while being at "Body Level of Awareness". The "Bali" can be performed only by an ascetic, no one less than that."
